This is my first attempt at writing up a pattern, so any hints and tips would be much appreciated.

For those interested in what I made but not so fussed with how I did it, skip down to the photos!

Materials
3.5mm crochet hook
DK yarn in black, white and yellow
2 buttons – about 2cm diameter

Notation
I'm using British notation, so if you prefer US, read SC for DC. The stitches used are:
Ch (Chain)
DC (double crochet)
DC 2tog (two together)

Size
I was making a cosy for an Acer Aspire One netbook, which is 24cm x 17cm. Adjustments can easily be made for other sizes, I'm sure!

BODY
This is made all in one piece, starting at the top of the front, working up the back and ending at the tip of the beak. I tried to incorporate the beak into the body (as seen a couple of the photos below), but it didn't really work, so I ended up making a separate beak and stitching it on. I've written this up as just continuing in black, so ignore the yellow bit in the first photo!

- Ch 41

- DC into 2nd from hook, DC to end. (40)

- Ch 1, DC in top loops of each stitch
Repeat this row until it measures the same length of your netbook. Took me 60 rows for an Acer Aspire One.

- DC in front loop only
(This creates the fold at the bottom)

- Ch 1, DC in top loops of each stitch
Repeat this row until the back is about three inches longer than the front. I did 83 rows here.

Buttonhole row
- Ch 1, DC in next 8, Ch 6, skip next 6 stitches from previous row and DC in next 12, Ch 6, skip next 6 stitches from previous row and DC in next 8 (to end)

- Ch1, DC 40

- Ch1, 2tog, DC to 2 from end, 2 tog (38)
Repeat this row until 16 stitches left. Finish off.

WHITE FRONT
- Ch 25

- DC into 2nd from hook, DC to end (24)

- Ch1, DC to end
Repeat this row for about 4.5 inches

- Ch1, DC 2tog, DC to 2 from end, DC 2tog (22)
Repeat this row until 16 left

- Ch1, DC 2tog, DC 2tog, DC 8, DC 2tog, DC 2tog (12)

- Ch1, DC DC 2tog, DC 2tog, DC 4, DC 2tog, DC 2tog (8)

- Ch1, [DC 2tog]x4 (4)
Finish off

YELLOW BEAK
- Ch 10

- DC into 2nd from hook, DC to end (9)

- Ch1, DC 2tog, DC to end (8)
Repeat this row until 2 left

- Ch 1, DC 2tog. Finish off.

EYES
These are worked in the round, around the buttons.

- Magic loop 6

- 2DC in each (12)

- [2DC in next, 1DC in next] x6 (18)

- [DC2tog] x9 (9)

- Insert button and sew closed.

- Embroider pupil using black yarn

FINISHING OFF
Fold the body at the obvious fold line, and sew up the sides.

Sew the white front to the front of the body, and the beak to the outside of the top flap.

Position the eyes according to where the buttonholes are (I found it very useful to insert the netbook at this point!) and sew them to the front of the body.

All done!

Work in progress:

Finished!

And, if you just button up one eye, it winks!
